Cults are often perceived as fringe religious or social groups and have a notorious reputation for their manipulative, sometimes destructive practices, but in reality, cults are everywhere and sometimes are unavoidable.  Recognizing the warning signs of a cult is crucial for individuals to protect themselves and determine when a cultish environment works in your favor and when you are drinking a poisoned Kool-aid.

A common feature of cults is the presence of a charismatic leader who is often viewed as infallible and omnipotent by group members. These leaders typically demand absolute loyalty and obedience. They may claim special powers, secret knowledge, or a unique mission in the world, creating a god-like image around themselves. In recent years cults have revolved less and less around religion and spirituality, and more around money, personal development, and self-care. Crypto, investment gurus, MLMs, and self-care influencers often employ cultish tactics to gain a following.

Cults often isolate members from family, friends, and the broader society to create a controlled environment where manipulation is easier. This isolation can be physical, such as living in a secluded compound, or psychological, through instilling fear or distrust towards non-members, but today it's often based on information and mindset. The cult leadership will often offer unique knowledge or access unavailable to the rest of the world to cultivate a mindset of separateness.

Cults frequently exploit their members, often financially, sexually, or through labor. Members might be required to donate a significant portion of their income, engage in sexual relationships with leaders, or perform unpaid labor under the guise of spiritual duty or communal living. Today many cults revolve around investments, insider knowledge, and get-rich-fast schemes. Indoctrination is a key tool used by cults to maintain control. This can involve intensive and immersive propaganda methods, including thought reform, manipulation of information, and the use of loaded language to reinforce the group's ideology.

Cults often expect a high level of commitment and devotion from their members. This can manifest in demands for significant time investment, participation in group activities at the expense of personal or family time, and pressure to conform to the group's beliefs and practices without question.

Cults typically promote a rigid us-vs-them mentality, dividing the world into good (the cult and its beliefs) and evil (everything outside the cult). This polarized worldview discourages critical thinking and fosters a sense of elitism and exclusivity among members.

Fear tactics are commonly employed in cults, either overtly or subtly. Members may fear retribution, either in this life or in the afterlife, for questioning the leader's authority, failing to meet group standards, or thinking about leaving the group. This fear can be a powerful tool to keep members compliant. One of the most definitive signs of a cult is the Penalties for Leaving, often the penalty will not be direct but based on FOMO which is more subtle and harder to resist.
